HPS Presents: Taking LGBQ-Affirmative Therapy to the Next Level

Dr. Reams will help us enhance our cultural competence for working with sexual minority (LGBQ) clients with an emphasis on clients who suffer from depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and other mental health conditions.

  1. Participants will be able to specify at least three characteristics of LGBQ-affirmative therapy.
  2. Participants will be able to describe the relationship between minority stress and LGBQ mental health.
  3. Participants will be able to specify at least one way they could make their practice more visibly LGBQ-affirming.

    Richard H. Reams, Ph.D.,  Associate Director of Counseling Services
    Dr. Richard Reams is a licensed psychologist who has worked in the office of Counseling Services at Trinity University since 1994 after receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.  For more than a decade, Dr. Reams has taught a course for undergraduates that explores the complexity of sexual orientation and the identity development process, has provided annual LGBQ seminars for pre-doctoral psychology residents in San Antonio, and has taught an LGBQ course for doctoral students in counseling psychology.  He is the author of an informational website,, designed to guide people of all ages who question their sexual guide people of all ages who question their sexual orientation.


    The Houston Psychoanalytic Society is dedicated to promoting psychoanalytic and psychodynamic principles through creative discussions with the greater Houston community. We warmly welcome everyone with an interest in psychoanalysis.

    The Society holds monthly meetings with invited local and national speakers, provides networking and continuing education opportunities and sponsors accredited workshops throughout the academic year.
